Every time you sign up to a service on the internet or purchase a product on an online store, companies collect your personal data. Most of the time, it’s for their own records. But every now and then they sell the data on or they are subject to data leaks, meaning your phone number often gets into the wrong hands. That’s when the robocalls start.
We’ve all had them – that annoying, monotone voice or the pre-recorded voice message that calls you on a Sunday evening just when you’re about to sit down for dinner. Sometimes they’re easy to spot, and you can just hang up. But often it’s tricky to tell. And you can’t just ignore calls from unknown numbers. What if it’s an emergency?
Thankfully, there are several steps you can take to block robocalls either through a second phone number app or by hiding your phone number. In this piece, we take a look at the best ways to stop these calls coming through – so you can remain free from interruption and keep your details safe and secure.
How to Stop Robocalls on Your Device?
First things first, if you are on a landline then one of the best ways to block robocalls is to dial *77 and activate Anonymous Call Rejection. This stops any calls coming through with hidden numbers. You can also add your number to the National Do Not Call Registry List, which actually makes it illegal for telemarketers to call you. But let’s be honest, who has a landline anymore? Most of us operate solely on our mobile devices these days, so we’re focusing on how to stop iPhone robocalls and Android ones.
#1 Use Your Carrier to Block Unwanted Robocalls.
Most major carriers, in the UK, Canada, and US provide tools with their service that let you identify, filter, and block those pesky unknown numbers. For example, AT&T offer a free app called ‘Call Protect’ that allows you to manually block particular numbers or avoid spam calls automatically. Unfortunately, some carriers charge for this service, and they often aren’t all that reliable.
#2 Manually Block Individual Numbers.
It’s a bit of a pain to do it manually, but if there’s one particular number that has been calling you repeatedly, both iPhones and Androids offer a way to let you manually block a robocaller number. If you’re on the iPhone, just go to the ‘recent’ tab and hit the information icon on the right-hand side of the number you want to prevent from calling you again. It will take you to a page where, right at the bottom, you can just hit ‘Block this Caller’. It’s normally pretty effective, but it doesn’t stop the telemarketer just changing their number and calling again – which they do all the time. On an Android, you can open up the phone app and tap the icon with the three dots (‘more’). Hit ‘Call History’ and then tap whichever number you want to block. On the next page, hit ‘Block/report spam’. It’s also possible to block unknown numbers in the ‘Settings’ section of the phone.
#3 Set Your Phone to ‘Do Not Disturb’.
This one’s a quick and easy tip for those moments when you just want to be left alone by everyone – perhaps you’re on a date or listening to a presentation. When your phone is set to ‘Do Not Disturb’, not only will all robocall numbers be blocked, as well as unknown telemarketers, but every single number will be unable to get to you and none of your apps will send you noisy notifications. It’s useful, but not all the time!
#4 Use an App to Stop Robocalls.
None of the previous options are 100% effective, and they all come with downsides. Either you have to block robocalls manually by checking their number, or you have to pay for a service from your mobile carrier. But there are now plenty of free apps out there that can identify who is calling you, block unknown numbers, and automatically filter out robocallers and telemarketers using crowd-sourced spam lists. Some of them come with free trial periods, and many are cheap. There are even some out there that will automatically give scammers a fake credit card number and send them a cease and desist letter in your name, but we wouldn’t recommend this unless you really want to annoy the spammers! The best app out there is CoverMe – we’ll tell you why below.
CoverMe is the Ultimate Privacy Guard for You
The best app to stop robocalls and protect your privacy is CoverMe, a free downloadable app for Android or iPhone that provides you with military-grade protection on your calls, secures your personal information, and prevents spam callers, robocallers, telemarketers, and any other unwanted third parties from ever getting through to you. Here are some of its features:
– Phone Number Masking and Second Phone Numbers.
The CoverMe app is a super simple, fast way to get a second phone number and mask your personal phone number. You can use the second phone number for all sorts of things, like separating your personal life from business life, or even signing up to services like Netflix or Twitter where you want to create multiple accounts and don’t want to give out your details. Having a second phone number is an easy way to prevent robocallers from getting hold of the personal number you use for friends and family.
– High-tech Call and Message Encryption.
CoverMe uses military-grade end-to-end encryption on all your calls and messages, meaning that hackers and other third parties are unable to intercept your messages and data. This means you can keep all your conversations totally private.
– Private Groups.
CoverMe offers the ability to create private groups with your friends and exchange calls, messages, video files and documents. And you can also make broadcasts to the other members, all completely secure and encrypted.
– No Phone Bill Data.
When you use CoverMe to send messages or call people, none of the information will show up on your phone bill. This allows you to retain your privacy and prevent your mobile carrier from tracking who you are calling.
– Bonus High-Security Features.
There is also a wealth of other excellent security features integrated into the CoverMe app. For example, there’s a personal vault with password encryption, which you can use to store sensitive information and documents. There’s also self-destructing messages, and a method for recalling messages that you’ve sent accidentally. You can also hide test previews or mask them with fake messages like, ‘That movie was great!’ – this stops people looking at your phone and reading your personal communications.
CoverMe is available free to download and use from the App Store for iPhones and from Google Play for Android. It’s the best way to get a second phone number on your device, block unknown numbers and automatically filter robocalls. Get the robocall killer app now by clicking here!
